Rio Tinto's Diavik Diamond Mine adopts MP-5
To manage their environmental monitoring data
The Diavik Diamond mine is at the end of the famous 'Ice Road
Trucker's Road' in the Northwest Territories of Canada, north of
Yellowknife.
The ice road is built by a joint venture of mining
companies (Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., BHP Billiton Diamonds
Inc., and De Beers Canada Inc.) operating in the area, and shared
by many users, from exploration companies to tourism outfitters and
Aboriginal hunters of the region. This seasonal winter road is only
open for eight to nine weeks each year, from February to the
beginning of April (depending on weather and the season's load
requirements), and it must be constructed each year to service
mines in the area.
Diavik Diamond Mines Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary
of Rio Tinto
plc, one of the world's leading mining and exploration
companies.
The Diavik Diamond Mine operates in one of the most untouched
and ecologically sensitive environments in the world. A vast tundra
surrounds the mine and is home to bears, wolverine and migrating
caribou. The waters of Lac de Gras are pure and teeming with
fish and bird life. Read more
Therefore, professional management of their environmental
monitoring data is essential, and is the reason MP-5 has been
adopted.
