How does licensing work for MP-5?
We have a simple licensing model which works the same as most
other installed products (e.g. Microsoft Office). You need a
licence for each PC on which MP-5 is installed. Licences are
How about Remote Desktop, Terminal Services, Citirx etc?
Licensing when MP-5 is installed via application sharing
switches to a per person model. I.E. each person allocated the
application via the service needs a licence.
Can licences be moved from one PC to another?
Yes, licences can be moved from user to user or from company to
company if needed. A new MP-5 installation will also run for 45
days in trial mode before it times out.
Can the software be installed remotely or will you need to be onsite to do this?
MP-5 can be easily installed remotely. Training can also be done
remotely over the Internet, however many users prefer someone on
site for this.
How easy is it to upgrade from MP-5 Standard to Premium or Professional?
Very easy. All MP-5 installations begin as 'Standard' version.
Prior to version 8, if 'Premium' or 'Professional' versions are
purchased, then you will receive an upgrade programme which you
need to run on your PC. The additional functionalities will then be
available to use. For more information, please contact us on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Post version 8 you will automatically be provided with the correct
functionality after the registration.
What operating systems is MP-5 compatable with?
MP-5 runs under both desktop and server installs of
On Desktops MP-5 works on:
- Windows XP,
- Windows Vista,
- Windows 7, and
- Windows 8,
And on servers it works with:
- Windows Server 2003,
- Windows Server 2008,
- Windows Server 2008 R2, and
- Windows Server 2012
Can I load the database on a server and run from a networked PC?
Yes. MP-5 is designed to work like this. Having the database on
a central SQL Server provides both a shared location for multiple
MP-5 user to login simultaniously, and also gives performance
Are there multiple user security levels and can I have read-only users?
MP-5 has 4 main login security levels with different permissions
within the application. More detail can be found in the user manual
after purchase, but as a brief overview here are the main user
- Admin - Full control to all functions and settings. Able
to view/add/edit all data points.
- Manager - Access to view/add/edit all data points,
schedules, tasks, and compliance levels. Unable to make system
changes or manage users
- Technician - Like 'Manager' but unable to edit schedules,
compliance, alerts, etc.
- Basic - This is your read only user. Basic users can only
view, export, and report on data. They are not able to make any
How do I provide remote access to MP-5 users? Will MP-5 run under Citrix or Microsoft Terminal Services?
One way of overcoming limited network bandwidth is to run the
applications at the server end of the network under Citrix or
Terminal Services and use the network only to transmit screen mouse
and keyboard changes to and from the client. This model makes the
application server behave like a mainframe, with users needing only
low-powered PCs or PC terminals to access the server.
Note: Every user that has access to MP-5 under these type of
system needs a licence.
Can MP-5 process email attachments automatically?
Yes it can. EHS Data sell a program called MP-Link which can
handle data being emailed from multiple sources.
With MP-Link in place to take your email attachments and send
them to MP-5, and the importers setup correctly is it even possible
to commit valid data into your database without any human
intervention at all. Click here for an overview of our
What are typical system requirements for MP-5?
Details can be obtained from here.
Is MP-5 compatible with Office 2007 and 2010?
Yes. MP5 can export various things to Microsoft Office, and is
also compatible with these newer versions.
What network speed do you recommend? Will MP-5 run across a Wide Area Network (WAN)?
MP-5 runs fine on a standard broadband/WAN connection provided
it is not shared by many users. A dedicated 500kbps connection is
What network software can I run MP-5 under?
MP-5 will run under any Microsoft compatible network.
What database servers will MP-5 run on? Is there an Oracle version of MP-5?
MP-5 uses SQL Server 2005, 2008, 2008 R2, 2012 and SQL
MP-5 does not work with Oracle unfortunately.
Audit tracking - can we track data that has been deleted?
All deleted objects and data go to the recycle bin, which cannot
be emptied by the user.
All edits are recorded as an audit history.
Can I empty the MP-5 recycle bin?
No. Users can not empty the MP-5 recycle bin. This is completely
intentional as it provides a record of all data that has entered
the system. It is also a requirement of our MCERTS accreditation
that users cannot delete data.
Populating the recycle bin has no discernable effect on database
Can the detection limit (& lab method) be stored with the result?
Yes. There are many fields built in. These include:
- Sample type
- Sample reference
- Lab Reference
- Test method
- Data qualifier
- Detection limit
- Data source (lab etc)
- Analysis date
- User-defined fields
Can MP-5 handle < (less than) values?
Yes. MP-5 stores both the text of any reading (whether number or
text), and the number part of any reading (where there is one) as a
Users can define their own 'Less than multiplier' per variable.
This enables them to create a numeric value from their <
readings of null, zero, 50% of the < reading, 100% of it or any
factor in between, according to site or regulatory
Typically text is used for viewing, and the number field for
calculations and summaries in MP-5.
Because of this dual system, a reading of 'DRY' for example is just
as relevant as '10'.
Can graphs be created in MP-5?
Yes, there are many ways to create and manipulate graphs within
MP-5 along with links to Goldern Software's Grapher.
Can graphs be exported from MP-5?
Yes, graphs can be exported in numerous ways, either an an image
or complete with data to Excel.
Can we put a second axis on the one graph (X & Y)?
Yes. On time series graphs you get a pick list of series
to draw. Ticking any series in the second set will display it on
the Y axis with its own scale.
Can I customise reports?
Yes. MP-5 uses Crystal Reports to provide the report template
through which the data is displayed. A number of reports are
provided as standard with MP-5. EHS Data provide a custom report
writing service. You can also create you own reports; you will need
Crystal Reports XI Standard edition to do this.
Can I create my own reports?
Yes. You will need Crystal Reports XI Standard edition
In the MP-5 selection tree, right click any report and choose
'edit using Crystal Reports'. You can edit the report and either
save, or save as... save as will create a copy.
Is there a maximum import capacity (# lines)?
There is no maximum number of lines that can be imported in a
single file. Speed depends on the hardware and import method but on
a low specification server using the auto importer with the file
posted to a folder on its local network, 10,000 rows would normally
take less than 10 minutes.
Will my data import to MP-5 without amendment?
The MP-5 importers are very flexible, and will import many data
Many suppliers of monitoring equipment, monitoring contractors and
laboratories will provide files designed for MP-5. Here is a
Three layouts of file are common, those with parameters (variables)
across the top, sample points across the top - or long list formats
with one reading per row.
Header aliases are easily set up, for example where MP-5 may be
expecting 'Date', but the file has 'DT', set up a header alias for
Object aliases can also be set up, for example 'Borehole 1' can
have aliases of 'BH1', BH001', BH_01' and so on.
Absent columns can be 'virtually' added. For example a weather
station file is unlikely to provide information within the file of
the name of the station. This absent column can be automatically
added to its files as they arrive.
Where files are too different for the above options, we can provide
custom import routines to plug into your importer.
Can we import a file with missing columns?
You can set up multiple different auto import folders, which you
can set defaults values for. With this set up if you have for
example, a specific file which doesn't include a location, the
location can be made default, thus eliminating the need for human
Can one reading be subtracted from the other, based on the time of the reading?
Water level data from some of our hydrological dataloggers will
need to be adjusted for the barometric pressure at the time of the
reading, prior to conversion to flow. This is typically collected
by a different instrument and logged separately. Can these values
be used to calculate the correct reading?
Yes, using MP-5's built-in calculation system. There is also an
option to track backward, forwards or both to find the nearest
matching record in time. This is useful where the Barometric
pressure is not read at the same time as the level.
The calculator is also very useful for generic calculations,
specific calculations, differences, averages, and many advanced
Is there a way to flag results from calculations that look unusual?
An example is if we are reading flow gauges on a pipe at regular
intervals and the difference between readings provides a flow over
time. If the flow meter is changed, the difference between readings
may be -ve. Can this be highlighted in some way, or an error code
attributed to the calculation?
Yes, the result of a calculation goes to a variable, from where it
can be handled like any other variable, with physical limit blocks
(such as -ve is impossible, don't import it), or with warnings in
the same way that a compliance breach can raise a warning.
Can we store calculations as another variable?
Yes. In fact, the result of a calculation (unless told to write
back to itself) is another variable.
Can we do complex calculations (eg. log, power, sin etc)?
Many complex calculations are available. The following are some
of the more common:
- Square Root
- Natural Log
- Log Base 10
- Natural Exponent
- Co Sin
- Arc Sin
- Arc Cos
- Arc Tan
- Logical AND
- Logical NOT
- Logical OR
- If Then Else statements
Compliance levels - Can we set up different standards for each variable at each site (eg internal vs external standards)?
Yes, and also for different dates, with both upper and lower
levels. The compliance grid system is 5 dimensional.
There is also the option to calculate results (e.g. the change
between one reading and the next) - and tie the compliance level to
User-defined types can be entered for every level, for example 'EA
Compliance Level'. You can have many of these, e.g. internal and
external standards, warning limits etc.
Projection for monitoring points - What coordinates need to be specified? Is this flexible?
For our built-in mapping we don't use projections. Over a small
to medium sized area the inaccuracies are small and the benefits of
simplicity outweigh this. Any numerical system will do as long as
the map matches the sample point co-ordinates.
